Say you know a man who loves to take pictures of everything. Now say he showed you pictures of children he saw at the beach – children he doesn’t know. Some of them are perfectly innocent, a toddler experiencing the ocean for the first time. But his personal favorite is of an older girl (10 or 11) in a bikini, bending over to pick up a sea shell. What would your gut tell you and what would you say or do?
He did not get permission to take the pictures. My sister and her husband were with him at the beach and they decided to leave early because they were so uncomfortable with the situation.

A while back, I mentioned that I broke my latest point-and-shoot camera. Since then, I went back to my old Minolta Dimage G500. It takes pretty good pictures — and, lucky for me, it’s built like a tank — but it has it’s drawbacks (most notably, every picture it takes contains 3 to 10 dead pixels, depending on the light level, that I have to fix in post).

Anyway, we thought it was time to buy a new camera, and, in fact, we ended up buying two: the Canon Powershot A590 IS (which isn’t even listed in Flickr’s Camera Finder yet).

The A590 IS is one of Canon’s lower-end PowerShots, but from all of the reviews — and my day of use — it seems like a pretty solid purchase that will keep us happy (on a point-and-shoot level anyway) for quite a while.

So, why’d we buy two? Well, I take my camera everywhere I go, so my wife rarely gets to use it. Now she can whenever she wants.
